Tips & PointersResumes That Don't Tell You Anything This is Bob Levey's column from May 1, 2003. Bob is the Washington Post"s "hometown" columnist, talking about anything and everything that affects or bugs the local citizenry. On May 1, he reported the rantings of a local Director of Human Resources who said "I am totally sick of job seekers whose résumés don't tell you anything." Yes, she is tired of resumes that are all fluff and no fodder and of folks who use machinations to try to get her attention. Her advice? "I think of a résumé as a letter of introduction. I never hire anyone on the basis of a résumé; I never have, and I never will. But I also never hire anyone who tries to make a résumé more than it can logically be. Let your résumé get you in the door and get you to the top of the pile. Don't treat it as a chance to go off half-cocked into outer space. It won't work. It never has, and it never will." Pay attention when the gatekeepers talk. Lying on Your Resume by Dawn Rosenberg McKay This 3-part article discusses the issue of lying on resumes and the ramifications, like being fired because you were caught and trying to explain why you were fired to a future employer. Part of the Career Planning channel on About.com Is Your Resume Honest? by Kim Isaacs (Monster.com) "One of the main reasons people lie on their resumes is fear -- fear of not measuring up, fear of being left behind, fear that a more qualified candidate will get the job. [...] While the fear is understandable, it doesn't excuse falsifying a resume to secure a job. And ask anyone who has been caught about how easy it is to give yourself away." Showcase Your "Home Run" Accomplishments An excellent article on documenting your greatest achievements during your career, done by Bill Frank, author of "200 Letters for Job Seekers." "Written records of your work results, achievements, successes, and accomplishments are the heart of your marketing campaign. They explain the essence of your "track record." Sooner or later, you'll be asked about what your triples and your home runs--or else your field goals and touchdowns--or any other metaphor you want to use. Writing them down on paper prepares you in advance." Resumania from Robert Half ...these are some of the greatest resume bloopers, blunders, and typos from real resumes. Your goal is to Not end up in his list. Top 20 Recruiter Pet Peeves About Resumes Results of a survey done by ResumeDoctor.com As they say, some of the Pet Peeves will be quite obvious, while others may be surprising. Number 15 surprises me. He says most folks want that resume in Word, but he cites formats other than plain text. In reading the actual comments, I only saw one person say he wanted a Word resume attached to an email, not plain text in the email itself. Others complained about non-plain-text formats other than Word. I got the impression that most of these people were third party recruiters who need to be able to forward a resume on to a client, and many wanted the recruiting industry to accept Word as the standard. My advice -- unless they say "send it as an attachment in Word," stick with plain text, but offer to forward a copy in Word upon request. With third party recruiters, this also means they have to inform you of their intention to forward this document to others, meaning you know where your resume is going. ...yes, she's trying to sell her books and services, but she also provides some good tips for constructing and critiquing a resume and creating cover letters. Susan has had several HR managers "find" resumes of their own employees while participating in her seminars, and many times she could tell that employee was toast as soon as the HR manager could get to a phone. I've heard the same thing from other sources, including reports from job seekers who had a lot of explaining to do when a resume was found still circulating a few months after being hired. I urge you to read these and consider the advice carefully. Preparing Your Resume for the Internet and Posting it Online ... my own advice on the topic Wonder how well it works? Demise of the HTML resume by Steve Alexander (ComputerWorld 1/24/00) "Recruiters say they don't like resumes created with the Internet programming language HTML because the format takes too long to read.
